Design Profile: The Kirra Abode
A Celebration of Creativity and Freedom
Nestled on the sun-drenched Gold Coast, The Kirra Abode was my opportunity to break free from convention and embrace the joy of ecclectic, expressive design. This project was less about timelessness than my Canadian home, 1020 Shaw, and more about creating a space that felt alive—a reflection of the vibrant energy of the coast and the spirit of those who would call it home, even for a short while.
Inspiration: Colour, Play, and Coastal Life
The Gold Coast has a way of inspiring a sense of freedom. Its breezy landscapes, ever-changing ocean hues, and relaxed lifestyle called me to design a space that felt both adventurous and inviting. With The Kirra Abode, I wanted to create an environment where every corner sparked joy and creativity.
The Vision
My goal was to craft a playful retreat that didn’t take itself too seriously, without breaking the budget. From bold colour choices to eclectic textures, every design decision celebrated individuality and embraced the unexpected. This wasn’t about following trends—it was about creating a space with soul, where creativity was at the forefront.
Design Highlights
Vibrant Palette: Inspired by ocean blues, sandy neutrals, and tropical greens, I layered pops of colour to bring the space to life.
Artistic Touches: Custom artwork, hand-picked statement pieces, and whimsical decor items gave the home its unique character.
Effortless Comfort: While the design was playful, comfort remained a priority—plush furnishings, inviting textures, and thoughtful layouts ensured the space felt like a true haven.
Functional Freedom: I embraced the original design of the unit and created cozy spaces within it using furniture layouts, which allows the space to evolve with its occupants.
Creative Freedom at Its Core
This project felt like a breath of fresh air. Unlike previous endeavours where timelessness, tradition and luxury finishings guided my choices, The Kirra Abode allowed me to lean into spontaneity. It was a reminder that design can be lighthearted and fun, a process of discovery rather than perfection.
An Inspired Escape
The Kirra Abode became more than a beautifully styled home; it was a place to dream, explore, and be unapologetically creative. It’s a project I’ll always cherish as a celebration of design’s ability to capture a moment, a feeling, and a way of life.
